Title: From Maximum Likelihood Estimation to Metastability; How Spin Glasses Give a Unifying Picture
Abstract: In this talk I will discuss the deep connection between classical high dimensional statistics, and the phenomenon of metastability that arises in out of equilibrium statistical mechanics models. We will investigate the performance of maximum likelihood estimation for "low rank" matrix problems, along with algorithms to compute such estimators, and in this investigation spin glass theory will begin to rear its head.
