Biography

Lilly Irani is a professor in Communication & Science Studies, with an affiliation in Computer Science at UC San Diego. She serves as the Faculty Director of the Labor Center where she helps build labor power over AI through popular education, research, and policy. She is author of Chasing Innovation: Making Entrepreneurial Citizens in Modern India (Princeton University Press, 2019) and Redacted (with Jesse Marx) (Taller California, 2021). Chasing Innovation has been awarded the 2020 International Communication Association Outstanding Book Award and the 2019 Diana Forsythe Prize for feminist anthropological research on work, science, or technology, including biomedicine. She has organized as part of the TRUST (Transparent Responsible Use of Surveillance Technology) Coalition. She also helped United Taxi Workers San Diego launch their app RideUnited. She currently serves on the AAUP AI Committee and is Vice Chair of the UC San Diego Faculty Association.
