British lutenist Nigel North has been sharing the music of the lute for over 50 years as a soloist, accompanist, ensemble musician, and educator. North discovered the lute in his teenage years and essentially taught himself to play. While still a student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, North was appointed a professor of lute, a position he kept for 21 years. North has given lute solo recitals since 1977, as well as performances in operas, Baroque orchestras, chamber groups, and with singers. He published a continuo tutor in 1987 and has recorded various awarded albums of music by J. S. Bach, John Dowland, Henry Purcell, and others. In 1988 he founded the acclaimed ensemble Romanesca with Andrew Manze and John Toll, performing 17th century chamber music around the world for a decade. An enthusiastic teacher, North has been an educator at institutions including the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, the Royal Conservatory in the Netherlands, and Indiana University, as well as master classes and workshops for the Lute Society of America, Toronto Conservatory of Music, Jerusalem Music Centre, and the Swedish Guitar and Lute Society.
