Known for her deeply expressive and richly beautiful voice, mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson has sung with major orchestras throughout the US, under conductors including André Previn, Simon Rattle, Neville Marriner, and Daniel Barenboim. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 1988 as soloist in Brahms’s Alto Rhapsody with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. A recipient of the Leontyne Price Award, Simpson has given operatic performances at La Scala, Glyndebourne, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Glimmerglass, and the Washington National Opera. She was featured as soloist in the 2006 Grammy Award-winning recording of William Bolcom’s Songs of Innocence and Experience, and her television appearances include the regional Emmy Award-winning Strange Fruit and the regional Emmy-nominated Musical Threads: Expressions of a People. In this master class, Simpson coaches accomplished Bienen voice and opera program students.
