The Black Arts Consortium invites you to a collaboration centered around Red Clay Dance Company's performances of Freedom Square: The Black Girlhood Altar coming to Josephine Louis Theater on Northwestern's Evanston Campus from Thursday October 1st-Saturday October 3rd. Inspired by Scherherazade Tilet's moving mixed-media installation, The Black Girlhood Altar, this work, created by Red Clay Director and CEO Vershawn Sanders-Ward and scored by singer-songwriter and poet Jamila Woods, serves as a love letter and memorial for the many Black women and girls whose disappearances and deaths have too often gone unseen, unrecognized and unacknowledged.
Following the opening performance Thursday October 1st at 7:30pm, audiences are invited to stay for a special post-show discussion. Moderated by Northwestern University Professor and Director of SLIPPAGE: PERFORMANCE | CULTURE | TECHNOLOGY Thomas F. Defrantz, the conversation will feature Vershawn Sanders-Ward, Scheherazade Tillet, and dancer Alex Kinard exploring the creation of the of Freedom Square, the realities facing missing and murdered Black women and girls and the role of art in remembrance, healing, and collective action.
