We will consider hierarchical triples in which the outer star donates mass to the inner binary. Some of the infalling mass may be retained by the components of the inner binary and some may be ejected, carrying away angular momentum. We will focus on applications of this scenario to compact-object binaries with black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarfs in all combinations.
Mass from the third star can change the fate of the inner binary, increase the merger rate, and sometimes transform the nature(s) of the compact accretors.
