Description:

Throughout the Winter Quarter, the Center for Latinx Digital Media invites you to a series of weekly seminars held over Zoom on Thursdays from 12-1 PM CT. You can now register (click here) to the seminar on Thursday January 14, 2021 at 12-1 PM CT, where Professor Hernan Galperin (University of Southern California) will give a presentation entitled "Digital inclusion and educational equity: Lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic."

Presentation abstract: The COVID-19 crisis has underscored the role of broadband connectivity for work, education and health. At the same time, it has also magnified the gaps in digital access and skills among vulnerable populations. Using data from a new survey among low-income Latino families in South and East Los Angeles, the presentation discusses the challenges for remote education faced by K-12 students from these families, and shows how the COVID pandemic is amplifying student achievement gaps.

Hernan Galperin is an internationally recognized expert on Internet policy and digital inequality. His research uses surveys, field experiments and other quantitative methods to understand the determinants of broadband adoption and use, and how these are linked to the mechanisms of social stratification and gender discrimination.

This event is co-sponsored by the Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities, the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, the Center for Global Culture and Communication, and the Latina and Latino Studies Program.
