The recent advent of numerous wide field transient surveys has led to a large increase in the discovery of tidal disruption events. In addition to aiding the discovery of a whole new class of variable astronomical event, temporal and spectra information probes the fundamental physics of the underlying phenomena. The talk plans to summarize the current state of knowledge and suggest the style of work that is likely to be necessary to continue making progress in the field.
