"Racial-Ethnic Hiring Discrimination, Immigration, and Labor Market Conditions"*
by Lincoln Quillian, Professor of Sociology, IPR Fellow, and Chair of IPR's Program on Urban Policy and Community Development
Abstract: In this talk, Quillian considers how racial-ethnic discrimination in hiring is related to labor market conditions and immigration status. The analysis is based on data combining results from more than 100 field experiments on race-ethnic discrimination in hiring conducted in 13 countries. The data allow for a broad view of factors associated with discrimination in receiving callbacks grounded in extensive variation in contextual conditions. The data suggest a stable ratio of positive callbacks for white to nonwhite applicants regardless of the degree of slack in the labor market. Immigration status does not produce more race-ethnic discrimination if the applicant received their highest educational degree in the host country and is a citizen. Non-citizens and persons with foreign educational credentials face significant callback penalties.
