"Striving for Upward Mobility in Adolescents: The School Context"*

by Edith Chen, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Chair, Professor of Psychology, Co-Director of the Foundations of Health Research Center, and IPR Fellow

Abstract: Health disparities by socioeconomic status (SES) have been extensively documented, but less is known bout the health implications of achieving upward mobility. This talk will address the mental health and physical health effects of upward mobility, particularly among adolescents of color. The conditions under which mobility can come at a cost will be discussed. In addition, psychosocial mechanisms related to upward mobility, and the role that school contexts play in these associations, will be described.

This event will be held in Annenberg Hall, Room G02.

This event is part of the Fay Lomax Cook Fall 2023 Colloquium Series, where IPR researchers from around the University share their latest policy-relevant research.

Please note all colloquia this quarter will be held in-person only.
