"Structured Discussion Across the Climate Divide: NU Friends & Family Climate Change Program"

by Mary McGrath, Assistant Professor of Political Science and IPR Fellow

Abstract: Climate change presents a dire political problem. If we are unable to check carbon emissions, increasing temperatures are projected to produce devastating effects around the globe. Effective global climate action requires international coordination, compliance with an international agreement requires public support of climate policy, and public support of climate policy depends on individuals’ climate beliefs. Despite overwhelming scientific consensus, attitudes and beliefs about whether climate change is a problem remain deeply divided by political party in the United States. This project examines whether a theoretically-grounded program facilitating discussion across the climate divide holds promise for shifting attitudes, beliefs, and willingness to support policy action on climate change.

This event is part of the Fay Lomax Cook Winter 2024 Colloquium Series, where IPR researchers from around the University share their latest policy-relevant research.
