Title: Preparing future scholars in discipline-based education research: An undergraduate research experience in a structured course
Abstract: Opportunities for undergraduates to engage in discipline-based education research (DBER) are often informal or limited in scope. Using our own work on evaluating norms in the field as a curriculum, we developed a structured course that embeds an undergraduate research experience. This format engages students in education research practices while serving as a research setting to investigate how they develop skills in framing research questions, collecting and analyzing data, and reasoning about the nature of science in education research. Drawing on examples from our implementation, we share design principles, methodological considerations, and findings that inform the preparation of future DBER scholars and broader efforts to connect undergraduate research experiences with the authentic work of the discipline.
