Northwestern Chemistry welcomes Kate Biberdorf from Notre Dame, hosted by Carine Nemr.
Strengthening Science Literacy: An Educator's Approach to Communication and Outreach.
Scientific literacy in the United States remains low, mirroring global trends that limit the public’s ability to interpret and trust scientific information. This lecture explores why effective science communication is essential, and what current research tells us about improving it. Kate the Chemist will share how her work as an educator and outreach leader aims to close literacy gaps by making science clear, engaging, and accessible. She will discuss her teaching approach at the University of Notre Dame, her methods for helping students develop strong communication skills, and the role of outreach in building curiosity and confidence in diverse audiences. Through practical examples and evidence-based strategies, this talk highlights how scientists and educators can strengthen public understanding of science and why this effort matters now more than ever.
Professor Biberdorf's talk is supported by an Academic Enrichment Grant from The Alumnae of Northwestern University.
