Description:

The Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs hosts running colloquia for graduate students to present their research to globally engaged faculty and fellow students. In our first colloquium of the year, Political Science PhD candidate Ely Orrego-Torres will present on “In the Name of Religious Freedom: Transnational Religious Mobilization in the Organization of American States (OAS).” Q&A and discussion will follow; light refreshments will be served.

Ely's dissertation research focuses on the concept of religious freedom and its importance in the construction of international global history. Her talk explores the mobilization of the concept of "religious freedom" at the Organization of American States (OAS), in particular. Using qualitative methods to analyze the discourse of religious groups involved in the OAS General Assembly Summit of the Americas between 2017 and 2023, she highlights the diversity of strategies used to mobilize religious freedom in the name of human rights (especially in regard to gender and sexual rights).
