In the Streets of Mexico City: Violeta Sánchez Sánchez’ Una mirada desde y hacia Xaltepetl
This talk is an exploration of how the Mexican state positions Mexico City as a site filled with Indigenous histories and artifacts and simultaneously obscures the literary works of Indigenous women in the present. Mariana traces her journey of walking, riding the train, and driving around the city to find Indigenous women’s literary works, interrogating how locating Indigenous women’s literatures was often met with silence. She then turns to Violeta Sánchez Sánchez’ (Nahua) poetry collection, Una mirada desde y hacia Xaltepetl, examining how Mexico dispossesses Indigenous communities through what she terms as maternal ruptures.
