Title: Sexual Harassment in Urban India: Prevalence and an Intervention
Abstract: Sexual harassment is pervasive across public spaces in India. Drawing on three interconnected research projects, Beaman will describe new data on how prevalent the problem is in three cities in India. Second, she will discuss how workers place substantial value on workplace safety, yet nearly half of surveyed firms fail to comply with India's 2013 Women’s Safety Act. This compliance gap persists despite clear legal mandates, and providing information alone does not close it. Finally, Beaman will discuss an ongoing randomized controlled trial with 5,000 firms in Delhi testing the effectiveness of sexual harassment training, and how best to induce firms to do the training.
