U.S. life expectancy has failed to keep pace with other high-income countries, a trend that has worsened over a period of decades. This presentation will examine the underlying mortality patterns responsible for this widening gap in life expectancy, including the age groups experiencing disproportionate increases in mortality rates, the leading causes of death responsible for current trends, and the populations that have been disproportionately impacted. Root causes and systemic factors that may be responsible for the declining health of Americans and potential policy solutions will also be discussed, with a special focus on the role of states.
