Brazil’s history is full of unexpected turns. Many are surprised to learn that Rio de Janeiro was once the only European capital located outside of Europe, or that the first reigning monarch to visit the USA, D. Pedro II, was a man who preferred libraries to palaces.

The Portuguese Department invites you to a special presentation: "D. Pedro II, the Yankee Emperor." This talk explores a remarkable chapter of Brazilian history and the first meaningful encounter between the leaders of Brazil and the United States. Our guest, award-winning historian Paulo Rezzutti, will dive into why this monarch was so fascinated by the American spirit and how his journey influenced the course of Brazilian history.
