Advancing EPR from Structure to Dynamics: Multi-Harmonic Extraction and Signal Processing Innovations
Abstract: Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy has long been limited by the tradeoff between measurement time and signal quality. We have developed two complementary signal processing approaches that fundamentally change this paradigm: SOFFA (Segmented-Overlap Fourier-Filtering and Averaging), which achieves 6-8x measurement acceleration while maintaining or improving signal-to- noise ratios, and MIXER (Multi-Intermodulation EXtraction for EPR), which captures multi-harmonic information content in saturation transfer experiments that reveals previously inaccessible dynamics information. I will demonstrate applications of these methods for CW-EPR and saturation transfer dynamics measurements. These platform-agnostic approaches work on standard commercial spectrometers and open new experimental possibilities at X-band that traditionally required high-field instruments.
