Title: Health Disparities: The Role of Social Relationships
By Edith Chen, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Chair, Professor of Psychology, Co-Director of the Foundations of Health Research Center, and IPR Fellow
Abstract: Individuals who grow up in low socioeconomic status (SES) environments or who are members of marginalized groups are at greater risk for a variety of mental and physical health problems. Yet many such individuals do not exhibit the predicted adverse health outcomes, leading to questions of what factors might be able to explain such resilience. This presentation will discuss the role that social relationships may play in helping to shift individuals who experience disadvantage earlier in life onto more positive trajectories of physical health. The focus in this talk will be on the adolescent period of life.
This event is part of the Fay Lomax Cook Spring 2026 Colloquium Series, where our researchers from around the University share their latest policy-relevant research.
Please note all colloquia this quarter will be held in-person only.
