Northwestern University Press Author and International Mask Master Antonio Fava Brings Italian Comedy to Northwestern University Libraries

Commedia dell'Arte — the Italian theatrical tradition that gave the world masked characters, physical comedy, and the art of improvisation — predates Chicago's celebrated improv scene by four centuries.

On Thursday, April 30, the Northwestern University Libraries welcomes Maestro Antonio Fava for an evening that brings this tradition to life.

An internationally recognized actor, director, mask maker, and author of The Comic Mask in the Commedia dell'Arte (Northwestern University Press), Fava will present a lecture-demonstration tracing the history and craft of Commedia dell'Arte — from its Renaissance origins to its enduring influence on comedy and performance. The evening will include demonstrations of the famous character masks and offer audiences a rare encounter with a master practitioner of the form.
