Join us for a Buffett Conversation with Dr. Karima J. Khalid, Lecturer and Consultant in Anesthesia and Critical Care at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and a co-founder of the Essential Emergency and Critical Care (EECC) initiative.
Critically ill patients die every day in under-resourced health systems not for lack of ventilators or intensive care units but for lack of the basic, low-cost care like oxygen, IV fluids, monitoring, and early recognition of deterioration that should be available at every level of the health system. Dr. Khalid will argue that closing this gap is one of global health's most overlooked opportunities: EECC identifies the essential, affordable interventions that prevent death from critical illness, and offers a practical pathway for delivering them even where advanced critical care is out of reach. Drawing on her work with EECC Global, the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists (WFSA) Critical Care Committee, and her ongoing PhD research at MUHAS in collaboration with the Karolinska Institute, she will review the evidence behind EECC, share lessons from implementing it in Tanzania and other low-resource settings, and explore opportunities for cross-institutional collaboration to advance this agenda globally.
