Pianist and composer Thelonious Monk had a lasting impact on the jazz world through his unique improvisational style, utilizing dissonance and angular melodies, with a percussive touch to his playing. His composition “’Round Midnight” is widely recognized as the most frequently recorded jazz standard composed by a single artist. A protégé of Thelonious Monk, pianist and composer Bud Powell, he was a key contributor to the development of bebop. Powell made numerous recordings on the Blue Note label, collaborating with artists including Fats Navarro, Sonny Rollins, and Max Roach.
