Gravity and gauge theory seem spectacularly different, yet their physical predictions reveal a remarkable structural relationship known as the double copy. I will discuss how this connection has evolved from a tool for calculating quantum scattering amplitudes into an organizing principle for gravitational effective field theories, with recent applications ranging from precision gravitational-wave physics to a novel window into puzzling aspects of black holes emit radiation and decay. I will close with some open questions about how far this might go, taking recent lessons from black hole studies to collective and cosmological spacetime.
