Please join the Department of English and Renassaince Lab in October 23-24 for the symposium "The World Encompassed: Early Modernity and Global Perspectives." This two-day event will bring together scholars working across different regions of the early modern world to foster dialogue on mobility, circulation, and the formation of global imaginaries. Rather than presuming a singular or unified notion of the “world” or the “global,” we seek to examine both the connections that linked distant geographies and the particularities that shaped local experiences. By placing diverse case studies in conversation, we hope to invite reflection on the analytical possibilities and limitations of global and transnational approaches to early modernity. In particular, we wish to ask how these frameworks help us understand the processes through which early modern worlds, and the idea of an early modern world, were imagined, negotiated, and produced.
