Islamic Ceramics and Other Fictions of Capital: Fabricating the Middle East for Modern Markets
"Historical ceramics from the Islamic world are now held in elite collections worldwide, but many of them are not what they seem. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, local ingenuity and expertise worked with a range of techniques to create new objects of desire for the global antiquities market. Craft skills in the Middle East were redirected towards a new market generated by the colonial project’s fanatical harvesting of artefacts: the fabrication, forgery, and fictionalization of antiquities."
