Ethics of Recognizing Contributions in Academic Collaborations

Receiving authorship credit or being acknowledged in publications are among the most commonly used forms of recognizing contributions in academic collaborations. However, recognition of contributions has become much more complicated in the last few decades, encouraging the academic community to devise new solutions such as the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) that could minimize ethical tensions. In this presentation, Dr. Hosseini will introduce CRediT and discuss some of the challenges of using it.

In-person attendance is open to the Northwestern Community: Searle Seminar Room in the Lurie Research Building (303 East Superior Street, Chicago Campus). Zoom attendance is open to all (registration required.

The Legal and Ethical Considerations of Posthumous Reproduction

This talk will discuss some of the legal and ethical considerations of posthumous reproduction. Professor Campo-Engelstein will outline the benefits and harms of posthumous assisted reproduction for various stakeholders, including the deceased, the deceased’s partner and family, and posthumously conceived children—and in doing so, will identify legal rights of posthumously conceived children. Additionally, this talk will describe why written consent regarding posthumous assisted reproduction best ensures the autonomy of the deceased. Lastly, this talk will explain why spouse or partner request for posthumous assisted reproduction is seen as the least ethically contentious, though it could reinforce heteronormative nuclear family formations.

In-person attendance is open to the Northwestern Community: Searle Seminar Room in the Lurie Research Building (303 East Superior Street, Chicago Campus). Zoom attendance is open to all. Registration required.

Jewish Resistance During the Holocaust:
Lessons from the Past and Guidance for the Future

Most popular accounts of the Holocaust depict Jewish people as passive victims who went to their deaths “like sheep.” A common question is, “Why didn’t they resist?” In this talk, I ask the opposite question: Why did Jewish people resist? I pose the question this way because from the perspective of theory and research on social movements, collective Jewish resistance should not have happened. By comparing resistance efforts in the ghettos of Nazi-occupied Warsaw, Vilna, and Łódź, I argue that decisions about resistance rested on ghetto residents’ assessments of the threats facing them; armed resistance took place only once activists reached the critical conclusion that they had no hope for survival. An examination of Jewish resistance carries lessons for contemporary action in a variety of settings, including resistance by health care professionals against state restrictions in medical procedures.

In-person attendance is open to the Northwestern Community: Searle Seminar Room in the Lurie Research Building (303 East Superior Street, Chicago Campus). Zoom attendance is open to all. Registration required.
